TUNKU ABDUL RAHMAN PARK (OR TARP). A 5,000 ha Marine Park with beautiful unspoilts islands only 30 minutes from Kota Kinabalu International Airport. It lies within the world's epicentre of coral garden biodiversity with over 70 genera of reefbuilding corals.

TROPICAL ISLAND EXPLORER(DAYTRIP)

Take a 20 minutes boat ride to Gaya Island to explore an uninhibited rainforest. Watch for mudskippers along the boardwalk laid through the mangrove forest (1-1 1/2 hours). Cicada shrills, birdcalls, and the occasional monkey calls lend for anexotic atmosphere. On to Manukan, Mamutik or Sapi Island for lunch and an idyllic afternoon of sunbathing, swimming, or just lazing int he shade on a tropical isle before returning to your hotel. (Lunch)

 

KINABALU PARK (754sq km/290 sq mi)Gazatted as a World Heritage site in November 2000. A priceless environmental resourc, and a favourite haunt for botanist, ornithologists and other naturalists.

It is home to Mt Kinabalu (4,095.2m/13,432.26ft) Borneo's highest peak, and to more than half the world's genera of flowering plants, with several plants, animals & birds found nowhere else.

KINABALU PARK HEADQUARTERS(Daytrip)

Depart on a 2hr, 90 km/55mi drive across the spectacular Crocker Range to the ecologically unique environs of Mt. Kinabalu. Stopping briefly at fruits and souveniers stalls. At the Park HQ (1,540m/5,000ft), a visit the Education Centre and the Botanical Garden to see orchids, rhododendrons, ferns,pitcher-plants, kerosene trees and others. Take a jungle walk near the Park HQ and learn more about the Montane forest. Mid-afternoon return to Kota Kinabalu. (Lunch)

PORING HOT SPRING(Daytrip)

Drive to Poring Hot Springs (130km). Trek through a hill dipterocarp forest rich in wild fruit trees and animal life, passing giant bamboos and ginger plants with edible flowers to reach a jungle - canopy walkway 40m above ground. Then relax in open air outdoor tubs filled with hot/cold running mineral waters.Mid-afternoon, return to Kota Kinabalu with brief stopovers at fruitstalls.(Lunch)

RAFFLESIA FOREST RESERVE(7 Hours)

Drive up through scenic Sinsuron Pass to reach Tambunan Raflesia Centre (60km) within Crocker Range Park. Visit the Information Centre. Walk the jungle trails in the cool mountain air (1,200m/4,000ft) to look for the largest flower in the world. Lunch at a mountainside restaurant before proceeding to the Tambunan plains and its terraced rice fields for an insight into the the rural lifestyle of Sabah. Return to Kota Kinabalu in the mid-afternoon. (Lunch)

THE NORTH BORNEO RAILWAY(4 Hours)

Brings to you the Romance of Steam Powered Locomotives. Take a journey into the colonial days of British North Borneo on board the steam engine.

DANUM VALLEY CONSERVATION AREA (438 sq.km) This undisturbed lowland forest is home to the full range of Sabah's lowland fauna, like the rare Sumatran Rhino, Wild Ox, Pigmy Elephant, Orang Utan,Proboscis Monkey and some 275 recorder species of birds

DANUM VALLEY RAINFOREST LODGE(3 Days 2 Nights)

Day 01- Depart from Kota Kinabalu for Lahad Datu by air. Transfer to Borneo Rainforest Lodge (90km/2 hrs) from Lahad Datu. After lunch, proceed for a guided nature trial walk for 1 1/2 - 2 hours. In the evening attend a talk/video/slide presentation on wildife/forest ecology. Night walk. Overnight at the Borneo Rainforest Lodge. (Lunch & Dinner)

Day 02- Early morning walk before breakfast. Spend the day exploring the surrondings (guided). Visit a Natural History Observation Trail with a 40m high tree platform. In the evening, go on a spotlighting drive to spot some of the nocturnall animals. (Full Board Meals)

Day 03- A guided morning walk. Return for lunch before departing to Lahad Datu and for the flight back to Kota Kinabalu.(Breakfast & Lunch)

 

SABAH MUSEUM ETHNOBOTANIC GARDEN TOUR(3 Hours)

An introduction to the flora and birdlife of Borneo in the 17 hectare Museum garden setting. These are both wild and cultivated, ranging from ornamental to fruit and timber trees, from edibles like rice, herbs & medicinal plants to poisonous ones and even the strange pitcher plant. Tour will end with a visit to the Museum indoor exhibits.(Refreshment) Birdwatchers, please bring binoculars.

KOTA KINABALU CITY BIRD SANCTUARY(KKCBS)

Designated as a bird sanctuary in September 1996, this 24-hectare remnant patch of the mangrove forest is located just 2 kilometres north-east of Kota Kinabalu city centre.

KKCBS is the only remaining patch of an extensive mangrove forest that once existed in much of the area of the coastal city of Kota Kinabalu.

This site is an important refuge and feeding ground for many species of resident birds, as well as several migratory species from Northern Asia.

KKCBS is not only much needed natural green lung for the city, it is also strategically located as an environmental educational centre, serving the people of Kota Kinabalu and Sabah (Refreshment)

 

THE TIP OF BORNEO - is Tanjung Simpang Mengayau, the northern most tip of the whole of island of Borneo. The third largest island in the world is a dramatic beauty. Pantai Kalampunian that is the approach to Simpang Mengayau is one of the finest beaches in all of Sabah, with crystal clear waters.

KUDAT-THE TIP OF BORNEO(2 Days 1 Night)

Day 01- Depart on a 3 hours drive from Kota Kinabalu to Kudat in the northern part of Sabah. Visit the Kg.Gombizau Honey Bee Farm to witness bee-keeping and the process of harvesting beewax. honey and royal jelly. Then onwards to Kg. Sumangkap Gong Factory, where gongs, the most prevalent of Sabah idiophones, are valued not only as musical instrumements but also as items of cultural wealth. Demonstrations of making gongs in various stages by skilled craftsmen is an experience not to be missed! Next stop will be the Kg. Bavanggazo Rungus Longhouse where you will step into warm and friendly lifestyles. Continue onwards to Kudat Golf & Marina Hotel and overnight.(Lunch & Dinner)

Day 02- After breakfast, check out and depart to "The Tip of Borneo" to stand on the northernmost tip of the world's third largest island. Take in the dramatic sights and sounds as you look out over South China Sea, with the Sulu Sea ove the horizon of the northeast. Return to KK. (Breakfast & Lunch)
