Completed in 1879, Fort Margherita commands a breathtaking and strategic position along the Sarawak River. The position of the fort had been carefully chosen to command the long straight stretch of river approaching the town, this being the most advantageous point from which to defend the town from possible attack.

The design of this fortress was based on the late English Renaissance fortresses and castles. Named after the 2nd Rajah, Charles Brooke's wife, the Ranee Margaret, it was built in the defensive edifice/castle style of the late English renaissance.
